Falls - Measures

There are several simple measures that can help prevent falls in the home. For example, using non-slip mats in the bathroom, mopping up spills to prevent wet, slippery floors, ensuring all rooms, passages and staircases are well-lift, removing clutter, getting help lifting or moving items that are heavy or difficult to lift.

Healthcare professionals take falls in older people very seriously because of the huge consequences they can have for the health and wellbeing of this group.
As a result, there’s a great deal of help and support available for older people, and it’s worth asking a GP about the various options.
The GP may carry out some simple tests to check your balance. They can also review any medicines you’re taking in case their side effects may increase your risk of falling. The GP may also recommend:
  • Looking after your eyes with a sight test if you’re having problems with your vision, even if you already wear glasses.
  • Having an eleectrocardiogram (ECG) and checking your blood pressure while lying and standing.
  • Requesting a home hazard assessment, where a healthcare professional visits your home to identify potential hazards and give advice.
  • Doing exercises to improve your strength and balance (read about physical activity guidelines for older adults)

Falls - Causes & Actions

Several factors contribute to falls in older adults, including:
  1. Health-related factors: Poor balance, muscle weakness, chronic conditions (e.g., arthritis, dementia, Parkinson’s disease).
  2. Medication effects: Side effects such as dizziness and drowsiness from medications like sedatives or blood pressure drugs.
  3. Environmental hazards: Uneven flooring, poor lighting, clutter, or lack of handrails.
  4. Footwear and clothing: Loose or slippery shoes, ill-fitting clothing that may cause tripping.
  5. Dehydration and malnutrition: Weakness due to inadequate fluid and food intake.
Immediate response ensures:
  1. Rapid assessment – Quick evaluation can detect serious injuries such as fractures or head trauma.
  2. Reduced risk of complications – Lying on the floor for extended periors can lead to hypothermia, pressure sores, or dehydration.
  3. Psychological reassurance – Prompt assistance reduces distress and anxiety in the individual who has fallen.
  4. Prevention of future falls – Addressing the cause of the fall can help implement strategies to prevent recurrence.

Falls - Overview

Amazing service

There are truly not enough words to use to thank and praise Fastfallresponse for their exemplary care and consideration when looking after my Dad. They show care, respect and compassion at all times. On top of this, the support they give to Mum cannot have been better. Nothing is too much and they go above and beyond in every way.

No hesitation to recommend this company and the Carers.

Firstly I cannot rate the carers I have met from this company highly enough. My Mum recently had a fall and broke her hip and was therefore in hospital, as my Mum is primary carer for my Dad who has Alzheimer’s I had to temporarily relocate from Scotland to stay with my parents. In the time I spent there, I could not have managed to both look after my Dad and be there for my Mum who had an extended stay in hospital if it were not for the excellent support and care my Dad was receiving. I was told to call any time day or night if I needed some assistance and I had to request this help on a number of occasions. The response was prompt and always dealt with in the most caring and professional way.

Truly Outstanding

Three years ago, this wonderful company provided care to my Father-in-law that was exemplary. Bedridden & frail, the compassion & care they showed to him was amazing to witness.
After his passing, they showed the same care & respect to my Mother-in law, who was able to stay on in her own home till the end, as she wished. This was due to the level of care & help they not only gave to her, but also us, the family.

Gerald’s Opinion

I am an 85 years old man and 8 weeks ago, I suffered a nasty fall at home, fracturing my femur and dislocating my hip. I am have been in hospital and rehab and my wife and my daughters researched care for me and found Fast Falls Response Ltd. Until then, I though I will never walk again. They have sent really brilliant and persuasively staff into my house where they do exercises with me and with their help I am now back on my feet. After 3 weeks of their ambition, I am able to walk with the walking stick.
